Oxfam
GB is a non-governmental organisation associated with Oxfam International, for whom work partners, volunteers and staff
from many different countries of the world – creating the global movement
for better, more just and fairer world. Oxfam is a catalyst in overcoming
poverty. To achieve this, the organisation works in the 3 following fronts:
-
Saving lives by responding swiftly to provide aid, support and protection
during emergencies
-
Developing programmes and solutions that empower people to work their way
out of poverty
-
Campaigning to achieve lasting change
I
started working for Oxfam in August 2006. After my initial training in
Oxford, I got deployed to Banda Aceh, where I work for the post-tsunami
reconstruction project. I head the office that carries out work in the
northern part of Sumatra island of Indonesia. Our projects include
rebuilding houses, construction of water and sanitation infrastructure, as
well as assisting people in regaining their livelihoods independence.
"Hunger, today, is a
weapon. It hits people, whose only fault is to find themselves hostages in
wars, which deprive them of direct access to food. By publicly denouncing
the cynicism of politicians who use hunger as a means of pressure or
extermination, we confront states with their legal responsibilities. In the
field, our teams provide aid to three million children, women and men each
year. By helping these people regain food autonomy, we give them back the
dignity they are due." – Quote from Action Against Hunger’s information
booklet.
Action Against Hunger USA is an international humanitarian
organisation, bringing people relief in the fields of nutrition, health,
water and sanitation and food security.
The organisation currently is working in 40 countries worldwide. Action Against Hunger USA closely cooperates with its
sister organisations in France (Action Contre la Faim France), UK (Action Against Hunger UK), Spain (Accion Contra el Hambre España), and recently opened office in
Canada (Action Against Hunger/Action Contre la Faim Canada).
I worked for Action Against Hunger USA between 1999 and June 2006.
The countries of my assignment included Afghanistan, Sudan (North and
South), Angola, Kenya and Pakistan. I carried out a variety of tasks. I was
in charge of finances, logistics, and general management of projects. I
eventually ended up having the responsibilities of a country director. I
also carried out the exploratory mission for ACF to open its new
headquarters in Warsaw, Poland.
Małopolskie Towarzystwo Oświatowe (MTO) – Educational Society for
Malopolska (southern province in Poland)
MTO is a Polish non-governmental organisation that promotes civic
society values in Poland and in some other Central and East European
countries. MTO has got a number of programmes for youth (runs a middle and
a high school), disadvantage members of the society (working with Roma
communities in Poland and Slovakia, programmes for physically disabled
people). MTO also has got a number of joint programmes with similar NGOs in
Serbia and Kosovo.
I stayed with MTO for one year between 1998 and 1999. I was
responsible for running the programmes for the disabled people (training,
courses, etc.).
